How to read this iron chart levels tool
This iron chart levels tool plots serum ferritin, serum iron, TIBC or transferrin saturation against commonly used adult reference ranges. Every laboratory sets its own range, so the range printed on your report wins.
Ferritin is an acute-phase reactant: infection, inflammation, liver disease and heavy alcohol use can raise it and mask deficiency. The World Health Organization threshold is ferritin below 15 mcg/L in adults and below 12 mcg/L in children under 5; ferritin below 30 mcg/L is widely used when investigating deficiency because inflammation can raise ferritin.

Why can ferritin look normal when iron stores are low?
Ferritin rises during infection and inflammation, and can also rise with liver disease or heavy alcohol use. That can mask low iron stores, so a clinician interprets ferritin with your report and health context.
Are ng/mL and mcg/L the same for ferritin?
Yes. Ferritin ng/mL and mcg/L are numerically identical units.
Can this chart diagnose iron deficiency or anaemia?
